Researchers from Boston University in the American state of Massachusetts have concluded that adequate levels of vitamin D in the body can reduce the risk of adverse outcomes from coronavirus infection. Blood samples were taken from 235 hospitalized patients and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured – a marker of vitamin D. 74% of the study participants were admitted to the hospital with severe coronavirus, 32.8% had sufficient vitamin D. Deaths among people under the age of 40 years was not recorded, however, due to infection, 16.3% of patients over 40 died. Of 206 people over the age of 40, only 9.7% of the deceased had sufficient vitamin D levels (at least 30 nanograms per milliliter), while 20% of those who died in this category had a vitamin D level of less than 30 ng / ml.
