Scientist Reassures: “Very Small” Possibility of Asteroid Apophis Colliding with Earth in Next Thousand Years

Amid scientific speculation about the possibility of the asteroid “Apophis” colliding with Earth during the next thousand years, Alexander Rudin, head of the Applied Infrared Spectroscopy Laboratory at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, revealed that the possibility is “very small.”

The scientist pointed out in an interview with the newspaper “Izvestia” that the asteroids near the Earth are well known, and they number several hundred.

He says: “The asteroid Apophis is one of these asteroids. This asteroid is very large, so if such a collision actually occurred, its consequences could be catastrophic, but its path is well known, so the probability of it colliding with Earth during the next thousand years is very small.”

According to him, approximately every 100 years, a large meteorite collides with the Earth, such as the Chelyabinsk meteorite, adding: “But since humans live in compact societies, the damage resulting from this is usually minimal; Simply because these explosions, most likely, occur either in an uninhabited area, or somewhere over the ocean, etc.

According to the Russian newspaper “Izvestia”, the dean of the Faculty of Physics at Minin University in Nizhny Novgorod said earlier: “The collision of the asteroid Apophis, with a diameter of 340 meters, with the Earth may lead to the end of the world.”
