Scientist from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology wins FameLab – SWR Aktuell

The young climate researcher Christian Scharun from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has won the FameLab for Germany. This is the world’s largest competition for science communication and takes place in 30 countries. Scharun researched the questions: How high are the emissions of greenhouse gases on oil platforms in the North Sea? And how is it related to global warming. To do this, he developed an algorithm to measure greenhouse gas emissions using satellite data. He was able to prove that the oil rigs in the North Sea are actually responsible for high emissions – with around 70,000 tons of methane per year. According to Scharun, this corresponds to the methane emissions of all cattle in Baden-Württemberg. With his victory, the scientist is now qualified for the FameLab world finals in Great Britain.
