Sciences. On March 21, a “potentially dangerous” asteroid grazes the Earth

Spotted for the first time twenty years ago by telescopes in New Mexico, the asteroid 2001 FO32 will pass less than 2 million kilometers from Earth on March 21 at around 5 p.m. French time, according to Science et Vie magazine.

Launched at more than 120,000 km / h, this large pebble would measure between 0.767 and 1.714 kilometers in diameter, that is to say five times as big as the Eiffel Tower.

It has been classified by NASA as a “potentially dangerous object” like any other object with a diameter greater than 140 meters and passing less than 7 million kilometers from our planet.

Rest assured: NASA has however identified no risk of collision, these 2 million kilometers corresponding to more than five times the distance that separates us from the Moon.
Astronomers will still be able to enjoy the show, as it can be seen through a telescope.
