“In general, the choice is due to the fact that this is the corporate color of Moscow State Technical University,” Roskosmos spokesman Dmitry Strugovets told news site Gaseta.ru on Saturday. “And all three crew members who arrived at the station yesterday are graduates of this university.”
Strugovets added that one of the three Russian astronauts, Oleg Artemyev, had already worn such a yellow and blue suit in the past. Artemyev was docked with his colleagues Denis Matveyev and Sergey Korsakov in a spacecraft at the ISS on Friday. According to the Ria Novosti agency, Artemyev explained the choice of color by saying that a lot of yellow material had accumulated in the camps.
The pictures of the three Russians in yellow and blue suits caused discussions on the Internet. Because yellow and blue are also the colors of the Ukrainian flag, some suspected it could be a gesture of solidarity with the country against which Russia has been at war since February 24. Others said it could be an allusion to Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea eight years ago.
