Science Talks are [Women] Talks # 1 – Artificial Intelligence and bias (…)

Worldwide, 33% of scientific researchers are women. According to UNESCO, by the age of 6, girls already consider boys to be more likely to be bright and more apt for “really very smart” activities than their own gender. What can be done to improve this situation? Is the situation the same in all scientific fields? What does it mean to be a woman in science in 2021?

“Science Talks are [Women] Talks “is a series of conferences designed by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Maca, with the support of the organization HKU Women in Science and Engineering, to open the discussion around issues specific to the world of science, through the experience of the women who are part of it.

For the first talk in the series, we’ll be focusing on a hot topic in Hong Kong and around the world: Artificial Intelligence (AI). In March, we had the chance to discuss AI with Hong Kong and French experts on the occasion of the French AI & Data Week @HKU.

This time around, a gender approach is used to discuss the area of AI research. To address these pressing questions, the City University of Hong Kong and the Consulate General of France invited Dr Rosa Chan and Dr Flora Vincent, two experts in the field, to share their experience and question the impact of gender on AI applications in research areas such as marine microbiology and neuroscience.

ABOUT THE STAKEHOLDERS

Dr Flora Vincent

Flora is a scientist specializing in marine microbiology. She is currently working at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, where she studies the impact of giant viruses on the marine ecosystem. At the same time, she became particularly involved in the subject of gender representation in science by co-founding WAX Science with Dr Aude Bernheim. It is a non-profit organization that promotes science without stereotypes by creating and disseminating innovative tools. She is co-author of the book Artificial intelligence, not without them! (Belin, 2019) which explores how algorithms reproduce sexist biases.

Dr Rosa H. M. Chan

Rosa is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on computational neuroscience, neural prostheses and brain-computer interface applications. She obtained the B. Eng. (1st Hon.) In Automation and Computer Aided Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003. She was subsequently awarded the Croucher Scholarship and Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad in 2004. She received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2011 from the University of Southern California (USC), where she also earned a Masters in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering. His laboratory is building computer tools to better understand how the brain works. She was co-recipient of the Outstanding Paper Award from the IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering in 2013, for her research breakthroughs in the mathematical modeling of the hippocampus for the development of cognitive prostheses. Dr Chan was the President of the Joint Hong Kong-Macau Chapter of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) in 2014. She was elected to the Administrative Committee of the IEEE EMBS (AdCom) as a representative of the Asia-Pacific region (2018-2023). Dr Chan is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neural Engineering, and Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia Brain published by IEEE-Wiley.
