Science – Bremen – Climate concerts: Scientists and musicians cooperate – Knowledge

Bremen (dpa) – Combining climate protection and classical music – that’s what the Helmholtz Climate Initiative and the 30 nationwide professional orchestras, which joined together in 2020 to form the Orchestra of Change association, want to do. At concerts, scientists have the opportunity to report on expeditions and their climate research, said the spokesman for the Helmholtz Climate Initiative, Roland Koch. The cooperation between science and music kicks off with the concert “The Beethoven Expedition” by the Bremen Philharmonic on March 26 in Bremen’s Übersee-Museum.

The musicians play Beethoven and pieces by contemporaries in small ensembles distributed throughout the museum. At the same time, the director of the Bremerhaven Alfred Wegener Institute, Antje Boetius, and two other AWI scientists report on the one-year “Mosaic” expedition to the Arctic. Visitors could stroll between the stations, Koch said. Further nationwide concerts with musicians from the Orchestra of Change are planned.

According to Koch, there is a broad repertoire of compositions that deal with air, water or earth. Researchers could provide visitors with information about the topic. “The emotional level can be connected to the rational level,” said Koch.
