Three years ago, director Denis Villeneuve took his audience to the desert planet Arrakis. There, Emperor Shaddam IV wants to introduce new times and win over Duke Leto Atreides of Caladan. In “Dune,” the actor who became known for dreamy arthouse roles fights his way through the turmoil of the attack on Arrakis instead of the canon of world literature. Timothée Chalamet aka Paul Atreidis survived the attack on the desert planet and went into hiding with the natives. They do not see him as a refugee, but rather as their Messiah. Paul is supposed to free them and their entire people from the oppression of the empire.
This suits the young fighter just fine, as he longs for revenge more than ever. But one thing could stop Paul: his love for Fremin Chani (Zendaya). Can she withstand not only the power struggles but also the manipulation?
“Dune: Part Two”: The Star Wars for adults
“Dune” is actually based on a Si-Fi novel by Frank Herbert from 1965. This film adaptation is preceded by two others, including one by David Lynch from 1984. Villeneuve explains his vision of “Dune” as “Star Wars for adults,” as the magazine described it Fandom quoted. According to the director, it is the biggest challenge of his career. At times the production team was filming in Abu Dhabi and Jordan in temperatures of 40 degrees.
Villeneuve’s film adaptation had a successful theatrical release in 2021 and won the most awards at the Oscars the following year. “Dune: Part Two” was intended to surpass the first part of the film series and was released at the beginning of 2024. In addition to Chalamet and Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Chrisopher Walken and Austin Butler can also be seen in the second part of the series. But that’s not the end of it for Villeneuve: a third film adaptation of the science fiction adventure is planned, according to the magazine Variety reported
