Schweinfurt: Safety deficiencies discovered again on the cargo ship

The Schweinfurt waterway police noticed a serious lack of security during an inspection of a goods motor ship on the Main: the more than 85 meters long and almost eleven meters wide cargo ship, which actually wanted to run around the clock, did not have the legally required number of crew members on board. A circumstance that not only significantly affected the safety of the remaining crew and the ship, but could have had far-reaching consequences for all shipping on the Main. In Würzburg, an inland waterway vessel ran across the Main last year and was unable to manoeuvre.

The Dutch skipper cited an urgent family matter in the Netherlands as the reason for the missing crew. According to the Schweinfurt water protection police, commuting between the respective home towns and the ships sailing throughout Europe is anything but unusual.

Due to the impact on the safety of the crew, the ship and the general public, the ship’s skipper in charge was immediately forbidden to proceed. The ship can only continue its journey in the direction of the Rhine with additional specialists. In addition, proceedings were initiated against the skipper.

A very similar incident happened recently. The officers of the water protection police at the Schweinfurt Police Inspectorate will continue to attach great importance to compliance with the safety regulations on the Main and other bodies of water during their controls.
