Schwäbischer Turnerbund: Movement is education!

In-house training for daycare teams to promote physical activity is in great demand. “These were great movement impulses that we can easily implement without a lot of material or preparation. That’s really great! ”

The first feedback from the educational specialists about the in-house training courses on physical activity promotion, which the Kinderturnstiftung Baden-Württemberg has been offering free of charge for day-care teams on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, was something like this. More than 400 pedagogical specialists have already received more than 40 training courses to promote physical activity. The foundation has already received more than 300 registrations to date. This shows: With this measure, the Ministry of Culture and the Baden-Württemberg Children’s Gymnastics Foundation are in tune with the times. Also and maybe especially in times of Corona.

Results of the school enrollment examination in the daycare year 2018/2019 show an average of 27 percent of the children a need for special needs in the area of motor skills. As part of the pact for good education and care, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Baden-Württemberg therefore started a further training offensive for educational professionals in summer 2020 in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Children’s Gymnastics Foundation. In order to implement the promotion of motor development in children, teams from day-care centers in Baden-Württemberg have had the opportunity to receive free in-house training courses on all aspects of physical activity promotion since September. The free training is organized by the Kinderturnstiftung Baden-Württemberg.

Easily implementable movement impulses conveyed directly in the daycare center
What is special: The entire team is trained and the training takes place on site in the participating day-care centers – of course, taking into account the hygiene concept that has been developed. Because even if the corona pandemic poses challenges for the organizational team, the training courses can also be carried out up-to-date thanks to the hygiene concept. “We have already been able to train more than 400 pedagogical specialists in the promotion of physical activity and the feedback from the participants has been very positive. We are very pleased! ”, Says project manager Gina Henz from the Kinderturnstiftung Baden-Württemberg. “During the advanced training, the pedagogical specialists in the daycare centers experience the importance of movement for child development, how they can easily integrate and promote it in day-to-day day-care life with the children, as well as connect it to other educational and development areas of the orientation plan. This is perhaps more important than ever now in times of Corona, “explains Susanne Weimann, executive director of the foundation. They also experience how much fun promoting physical activity can bring them and their daycare children. That is well received: “We had a great training course with appealing material and simple games and movement ideas that we can implement immediately. It was great fun and we are already looking forward to implementing the movement impulses with our little ones ”, sums up one participant of one of the first in-house training courses.

Daycare centers enthusiastic about the movement tonni
The foundation is supported by its founders Badischer Turner-Bund eV and Schwäbischer Turnerbund eV in the development of the advanced training modules and the organization and implementation of the in-house advanced training courses. The speakers train the daycare teams in one compulsory and two elective modules and teach on-site how exercise can be encouraged. With the start of the advanced training, the daycare center will also receive an exercise tonni with a variety of exercise materials and the advanced training manual “Exercise is Education”. “The daycare centers are enthusiastic about the Tonnis. “In the advanced training courses that have taken place so far, we have seen motivated daycare specialists who can hardly wait to use the materials and already plan on-site what can be done and how,” said one speaker.

Minister of Education supports the promotion of physical activity in daycare
“The feedback from previous training courses is extremely positive and also confirms the training concept. The corona pandemic in particular made it clear to us once again how important exercise is for all of us. And that starts with the little ones, who need exercise not only for their well-being and fun, but also for their education, ”says Dr. Susanne Eisenmann, Minister for Culture, Youth and Sport, adds: “Unfortunately, children and young people are moving less and less. We are all the more challenged to create spaces and opportunities for movement. It is important to encourage our children more, to exercise, to be active, to play outside. The earlier children enjoy exercise, the more they can benefit from it. That is why it is essential to encourage physical activity in day-care centers – and that also has an impact on everyday school life: because the little ones are more concentrated and can better follow the lessons. “
