What is it like to live in the same village as Michael Schumacher? Two residents talk about the past and the present with the multiple Formula 1 world champion.

Gland – In a quiet town on Lake Geneva, a Formula 1 legend has been living behind closed doors for almost ten years. Michael Schumacher is an invisible citizen in Gland.

After the serious skiing accident, to date no information has been received on his specific health conditions. The Netflix documentary “Schumacher”, released last September, in which Schumacher recounts, among other things, a near-death experience, provided insight. “Michele is still here. Different, but he is here,” said his wife Corinna.

This article dates back to July and is one of those that aroused particular interest in 2022. That’s why we’re bringing it back to you at the end of the year.

Michael Schumacher, the invisible inhabitant of Gland: “We saw him”

In Gland, people have long since gotten used to life without – yet somehow with – Michael Schumacher. The American magazine Sports illustrated dedicated a detailed review of the life of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion. Jon Wertheim, one of the most famous sports journalists in the United States, traveled to Switzerland and visited the Gland community of 11,000 people, where the Schumacher family has been living for over 20 years.

There he spoke to two residents of Schumi. “We used to see him, he was among us. Obviously no one sees him anymore. Sometimes we see his wife on horseback. But Michele? Never», a woman tells him. Schumi lives his “second” life behind the high fence of his villa in lakeside with view of the Swiss Alps.Owes nothing to the public.

Michael Schumacher: Gland’s people ‘don’t want to talk about him’

“We don’t want to forget him. But we also don’t want to talk about him,” another resident says thoughtfully. The name Schumacher will always be associated with the place, and the people of Gland know it too.

The former Ferrari driver can be more than proud of his son. Mick Schumacher not only made it to Formula 1, he also scored his first points in the last two races at Silverstone and Spielberg. But he can’t share these moments with his father, who put him in a kart like a little thorn. “I’d give it all up just for this,” Mick says in the documentary about his father. After all, Schumi is definitely happy, he just can’t show it. (eppe)
