The 17th edition of the North Rhine-Westphalia School Cinema Weeks will take place from January 25th to February 7th and registrations for the largest film educational project in the state are now open. In around 120 cinemas from Aachen to Wuppertal there are almost 100 films in the program, all with specific references to the curricula, each one with detailed teaching material that can be downloaded free of charge. The Mettmann Weltspiegel cinema is also there again.
The SchulKinoWochen NRW is organized by “Vision Kino – Network for Film and Media Competence” and “FILM+SCHULE NRW”, a joint initiative of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and the NRW Ministry of Education. On the website www.schulkinowochen.nrw.de You can find all information about the film program and the accompanying events with exciting guests.
Discussions with filmmakers – from directors to production designers – or experts on the 2024 Science Year with the theme “Freedom” and the special program “17 Goals – Cinema for a Better World” as well as cinema seminars and further training on film analysis and film practice in class complement the regular events Program. A special series by the Federal Agency for Civic Education on the topic of “Everyday life and resistance – courageous girls and women in Iranian society” shows filmic perspectives from a torn country. Short film programs on Jewish life in Germany and on democracy education and critical dealings with right-wing extremism offer starting points for discussions on pressing social issues. Numerous films are also available for foreign language lessons in the original language or with subtitles.
The long-standing motto of the SchulKinoWochen NRW – “Live TOGETHER. see. learn.” – also proves its relevance in this issue. Leopold Grün, the managing director of “Vision Kino – Network for Film and Media Competence”, emphasizes the importance of a diverse and responsible film selection: “We are looking forward to a film program for children and young people that takes their interests seriously, our diverse society and thus also takes into account the discrimination-sensitive perspective that has become more important to us when selecting films.”
The reduced admission price for the cinema screenings is 4.50 euros; teachers and accompanying persons have free entry. In 2024, students can again take part in a film review competition spinxx.de, the online magazine for young media critics, take part and win prizes for the entire school class. The SchulKinoWochen NRW project team in the LWL Media Center for Westphalia is available for personal advice on the hotline 0251-591-3055.
