Schrameyer: “It’s like who rules Bulgaria – once again only representatives of the oligarchy gathered” – 2024-08-29 06:31:54

/ world today news/ “Only representatives of the oligarchy gathered in the parliament – and in this sense it is absolutely indifferent who rules,” said German diplomat Klaus Schrameyer in an interview with Deutsche Welle regarding Borisov’s agreement with the United Patriots.

We publish the full text of the conversation with Klaus Schrameyer.

Deutsche Welle: Mr. Schramaier, if indeed Borissov forms a coalition government with the United Patriots, what do you think are the dangers?

Klaus Schrameyer: There is mainly the danger that it will not survive for long, because between the GERB and the “United Patriots” (OP) there are significant substantive differences. I don’t know how Borisov will even be able to come to an agreement with the nationalists, because they set quite extreme demands.

DV: What do you mean?

Schrameyer: Well, for example, the fact that they are against the introduction of majority vote, which Boyko Borisov is very keen on. Not to mention that OPs themselves are not internally stable. It is known that there are major contradictions between the partners in this coalition.

DV: From the first statements yesterday, it is clear that among the priorities of a future GERB government with the OP will be, among other things, the fight against corruption, the implementation of judicial reform…

Schrameyer: How many times have we heard that?! I don’t believe that will happen. Especially after GERB did everything possible to torpedo them (judicial reform and the fight against corruption – ed.). And even more so the nationalists! This is unbelievable, dust in the eyes.

DV: And are the “United Patriots” acceptable as a coalition partner from the point of view of Europe?

Schrameyer: Of course not! These nationalists recently showed their true colors again with the blockade of the Turkish border. But what else is left for Boyko Borisov? The allocation of seats in the parliament seems to allow nothing else. However, Borisov has himself to blame. It was completely unnecessary for him to resign and go to early elections. He did it in the naive hope that he would get a bigger majority – and now he has to scratch the surface. He had the choice between Scylla in the person of the BSP and Charybdis in the person of the United Patriots. Both options are unfortunate. Unfortunately, as far as I can see, only representatives of the oligarchy gathered in the parliament – and in this sense it is absolutely irrelevant who rules. They will all light the fire under the common cauldron and stir the soup together. There’s just no real opposition there, not one person. At this point, it’s like who’s in charge.

Bulgaria and Europe: what now?

DV: On the other hand, it is said that Bulgaria is simply obliged to preserve its stability in this difficult time, in this crisis region, directly on the European border with Turkey…

Schrameyer: Yes, but even a provisional government like Gerdzhikov’s is able to maintain stability. In my opinion, there is no danger to the stability. If we compare with neighboring Macedonia, the situation in Bulgaria is much better, the country is stable. However, without the will to reform, this stability actually means stagnation.

DV: What does this mean for the new parliament?

Schrameyer: In my opinion, it is only a question of the parliament passing the time until the next early elections, that is, until the end of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU. I think that at the end of 2018 there will be new elections, because the current distribution of forces is simply impossible.
