It is not only because of corona that schools are having a hard time. The teacher shortage is also becoming more and more noticeable, especially if teachers are still absent due to quarantines. In Community education alone, there are currently about 2000 vacancies for a full-time teacher. In addition, the schools are also looking for 500 other staff: from secretarial staff to maintenance staff. This is apparent from a survey conducted by Community Education.
The measures taken by Minister Weyts to reduce the teacher shortage are in themselves good, but not sufficient, says CEO of the Community, Koen Pelleriaux. He wants to attract other profiles for education, among other things by giving teachers higher wages. In addition, Pelleriaux also wants more university graduates for the classroom, including in primary education and in the first two grades of secondary education.
