When grandma and grandpa look after them in the next room
It is questionable whether this would actually happen in real life. Yes, the number of contacts might decrease overall. But at least Austria’s employees have to continue doing their jobs (even if currently often only in the next room). They are forced to have their children looked after. In the process, relatives are forced to fall back on, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle. An age group with a particularly high incidence would come into close contact with more vulnerable age groups. Such a constellation would probably be a problem even in countries that have a higher vaccination rate than Austria.
It is also questionable to what extent children and young people can really be prevented from meeting their peers. In addition, Thomas Czypionka, health economist at the “Institute for Higher Studies” (IHS), points out that if schools were to be closed, the nationwide school corona tests would be omitted – even if they are not currently taking place in sufficient numbers.
