Schools Bonaire can reopen now that teachers have been vaccinated | NOW

Childcare and schools on Bonaire will open again, Island Governor Edison Rijna announced on Sunday. Although many corona infections are still diagnosed on the island, education can start again from Monday because the teachers have been vaccinated.

It is important for the development of children that they can go to school to learn and to meet their peers there, said Rijna. That is why the schools on the island are allowed to open their doors again.

In secondary education, lessons are organized in such a way that teachers and students can keep 1.5 meters away. This is not necessary in primary schools. It is important that everyone at school adheres to the corona rules, Rijna emphasized. For example, parents may not be at school longer than strictly necessary.

Bonaire introduced a lockdown on March 18 due to the increase in the number of infections, which also closed the schools.

More than a quarter of the population has had a first injection

For several weeks now, the population has been urged to get vaccinated. According to the figures of Friday, April 9, nearly 6,000 people have been vaccinated once, and of them more than 2,000 have also had a second shot. In total, almost ten thousand people, out of a population of more than twenty thousand people, have signed up for an injection.

109 corona infections were registered on Bonaire on Sunday. Ten corona patients are in hospital, four of whom are in intensive care. In addition, two Bonaire corona patients are in hospital in Aruba and five in Colombia.

In the other special municipalities of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, Saba and St. Eustatius, relatively few corona infections have recently been detected.
