It has not taken even a week for school transportation to become the leading problem for the AMPA of IES A Sardiñeira. And, after spending half the course last year defending the interests of the residents of Novo Mesoiro and their inability to travel to the center, the situation could be defined as covering the head to uncover the feet: the commitment to the peripheral neighborhood and the bus enabled by the Xunta in the last quarter, but the center goes from having three transport routes to only two.
The students of the Sagrada Familia, San Pedro de Mezonzo or the Plaza de Monforte no longer have their own stop, even though the majority of them come from the CEIP Rosalía de Castr, a center attached to the IES A Sardiñeira. The situation has taken by surprise many parents who took for granted and solved the problem of transferring to the center for children who, in some cases, enter Secondary School at the age of 11. Sources from the AMPA of A Sardiñeira convey a feeling of deception when it comes to complying with the roadmap. “Many parents decided to choose that center because the bus passed in front of their house, and when completing the registration, reference was made to the availability of transportation,” they explain. “One of those affected on Arteixo Avenue, in addition to coming from Rosalía de Castro, decided on IES A Sardiñeira because his son suffers from an autism spectrum disorder and does not have enough autonomy to go to school; It is no longer just about that, but about the many families to whom they have sold something and they just change the film at the last moment,” they add from the AMPA.
Closeness and danger
The more than 20 families who have brought their complaints to both the center and the Department of Education are aware that they do not have the upper hand, due to a proximity criterion that establishes that, with a distance from the center of less than 2 kilometers, the stop is not assured. However, both the AMPA and individual families request a review of the type of travel that having to walk would force their children to do. “This is a very dangerous journey, with no alternatives in urban transport, and with the installation of new roads it will become an even greater threat,” say AMPA sources.
On the other hand, the feeling is very different in Novo Mesoiro. And, despite not having managed to make IES A Sardiñeira an affiliated center, the maintenance of the bus line is a relief for parents.
The Xunta affirms that it followed instructions from the management
The Department of Education of the Xunta de Galicia, one of the recipients along with the management of the center of parents’ complaints, ensures that the design and configuration of the school transport lines has followed the instructions of the management of the IES A Sardiñeira . “To establish this service, with routes, stops, etc., the instructions given by the center’s address were followed,” say sources from the regional government, who also recall the support provided to residents in Novo Mesoiro, despite the fact that the center assigned to the neighborhood is the IES Elviña.
