Overtime will be better paid for state officials and teachers in the future. However, there is one restriction.

State officials and teachers receive Overtime will be better paid in the future. The remuneration will increase by 4.76 percent from November 1, 2024 and by another 5.5 percent from February 1, 2025. This was decided by the cabinet, as announced by the Ministry of Education. The state is therefore expecting additional costs of 7.5 million euros annually.

According to the information, overtime primarily affects teachers. However, they still have to work at least four hours of overtime in a month to get paid. Those who work up to three hours get nothing. Nothing has changed in this regard with the new state regulation on overtime pay, a ministry spokesperson said when asked by the German Press Agency.

One in three teachers affected

According to the information, overtime pay was paid to 1,326 state officials last year, including 1,302 teachers. In addition, there were 2,713 teachers employed under collective agreements. This means that around one in three teachers in MV is affected.

Education Minister: Extra work must be worthwhile

Education Minister Simone Oldenburg (Left Party) stressed: “If teachers are prepared to step in for their colleagues at short notice and prevent class cancellations, it must also be worthwhile for them.”

Finance Minister Heiko Geue (SPD) explained in the press release that the increase in remuneration for ordered overtime was a sign of appreciation for the state’s employees. “In a comparison of the federal states, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is in second place.” This is a good signal in the competition for teachers.
