The SPD and the Greens in Lower Saxony’s state parliament are campaigning for more balanced meals in daycare centers, schools and senior citizens’ facilities. The school canteens should also be further developed into “learning places”, as stated in a proposal from the government factions. To this end, model projects should be initiated that are based on the quality standards of the German Nutrition Society.
According to Green MP Christian Schroeder, the parliamentary groups expressly leave open exactly what the Red-Greens envision as a place of learning for nutrition education. “The path there is deliberately not clearly defined. Because for us it’s about not restricting ideas through specifications,” said Schroeder.

Cooking courses, practical information events about healthy eating or exhibitions for children and young people are conceivable. The teachers, students and other parties involved such as the Lower Saxony Center for Nutrition and Home Economics should be able to develop their ideas freely.
“So that there is tailwind from politics for the first model projects throughout the country, we are committed to providing the application with the necessary financial resources as soon as possible,” said Schroeder. The SPD and the Greens are also appealing to the state government to check whether nutritional offerings at daycare centers and schools can be financially supported.
