School Canteen Prices Increasing for the 2022-2023 School Year: Find Out How Much You’ll Pay

At the start of the school year, families will have to pay a little more to put their child in the canteen. An increase ranging from €0.05 to €0.19 per meal or from €0.03 to €0.10 if a picnic is provided by the parents.

The lunch break prices will increase from September 1 for brilliant schoolchildren. A change which will represent an additional cost of €0.84 to €3.36 per child and per month, since the amounts are calculated according to the family quotient.

The meal therefore costs €1.55 for the most modest households ( instead of €1.50 ) and €5.69 for the wealthiest (instead of €5.50). If a picnic is provided by the parents, the envelope goes down between €0.78 and €2.85 (instead of €0.75 and €2.75 respectively). For people who don’t live in Bron, it’s a single price of €6.21 or €3.11 if the dish is donated by the family (instead of €6 and €3 respectively).

Evening extracurricular also becomes chargeable

However, these are modest sums compared to the prices of extracurricular evening care, which will also increase at the start of the school year. Families will have to pay up to €6.05 per day for their child to be looked after until 6:15 p.m. This service was free until now, but the hours were more restricted (closing at 5:45 p.m. earlier). In early June, several parents of students then expressed their disagreement with this measure, in front of the town hall.

An additional cost of more than €60,000 for the City

Whether for extracurricular activities or the lunch break, the difficulties in recruiting staff and the increase in their remuneration partly induce this financial increase.

As for the meridian break, “it includes the canteen but also the care of children between noon and two,” insists Tarik Ez-Zajjari, Education Assistant. “The budget for supervision has jumped by 13% in one year and foodstuffs by 14%. This readjustment represents between €60,000 and €65,000, according to the elected official. Families are only asked to bear 3.5% and the City absorbs the rest. »

A request to which the socialists and environmentalists opposed (read elsewhere), and the communist party abstained on this deliberation.

“The central kitchen is closing and prices are already rising”

Lucile Morel, elected socialist, says she is “against these increases just one year after the closure of the central kitchen in Bron”. The establishment was installed rue Jeanne-Collay since its creation in 1968. Since September 2022, school meals are no longer prepared by municipal officials, the private company Elior delivers them directly.

This is why François-Xavier Pénicaud, elected independent centrist, wonders about the part of the provider, who could also endorse part of this increase.

“Despite the increase, half of the slices pay less than the price charged in 2017 “, argues Tarik Ez-Zajjari. After verification by our editorial staff, four installments out of the ten are indeed cheaper than in 2017.
