NEW YORK – A Hispanic school bus driver on Long Island was arrested after she was found falling on the steering wheel of the vehicle Monday.
Nassau County Police said 29-year-old Mercedes Parada was clearly drunk when officers observed her in the driver’s seat of the school bus Monday minutes before 5:00 p.m. m., between South Franklin and Grove streets, in Hempstead. Officers who responded to the scene reported that they saw “multiple clues” indicating the presence of alcohol.
All the children inside the vehicle were accounted for and safely delivered to their parents, according to police.
Parada was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated (under the age of 15) under the Leandra Act, and endangering the welfare of a child.
