Schoof more explicitly distances himself from PVV statements about Halsema: ‘It really goes too far’

ANPP Prime Minister moved into the House of Representatives

Prime Minister Schoof has more explicitly distanced himself from PVV statements about Amsterdam mayor Halsema. “Let me be clear. It really goes much too far to ask for the resignation of one of our mayors in the House of Representatives for political reasons,” said the Prime Minister during the debate on the budget of the Ministry of General Business.

He responded to criticism from the House of Representatives that he did not explicitly distance himself from it yesterday X report from Wilders. In the message, the PVV leader wished Halsema out of the country, following a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the capital.

‘Choose my words carefully’

Schoof said that he clearly said twice on Tuesday that he supported Mayor Halsema. But the point was that he decided not to respond to statements made by party leaders on social media. “I really try to avoid responding to every message. I choose my words extremely carefully.”

On Wednesday, PVV MP Deen said in a debate in the House of Representatives that the Amsterdam mayor should be fired. This was met with strong criticism, including from NSC Minister of the Interior Uitermark. She finds the request “inappropriate” and says she will not respond to it.

Issue

Now that the PVV statements have also been made in the House of Representatives, Schoof sees reason to address the issue again. “This cabinet fully supports mayors. This also applies, and perhaps especially, to the mayor of Amsterdam.” He denies that he is afraid to confront the PVV leader about his words.
