German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today ruled out arming Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles if German soldiers were involved to help operate them, Reuters reported.
“You can’t deliver a very long-range weapon system and not think about how to control it. If you want to control them, and that is only possible with the participation of German soldiers, then that is not up for discussion,” Scholz said.
Reuters recalls that so far Germany has rejected the possibility of sending “Taurus” to Ukraine, worried that it could be involved in a direct confrontation with Russia, reports BTA. The issue escalated after Russian media on Friday published a 38-minute recording of a conversation in which German officers were heard discussing arms supplies to Ukraine and potential Kiev strikes on the Crimean bridgehead.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said today during the World Youth Festival in Sochi that Moscow will show restraint in response to the recording, but will not forget it, Reuters reported, citing the RIA Novosti agency.
