Scholz hardened his tone and issued an ultimatum to Putin

Sanctions imposed on Russia over the invasion of Ukraine will not be lifted until Moscow concludes a peace agreement with Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, adding that it depends on Kyiv what kind of peace it wants, Reuters reported.

In an interview with German public television, Zet DeF Scholz said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had made a mistake if he expected to be able to acquire territory from Ukraine, declare an end to hostilities and then lift Western sanctions.

“He did not think enough about his whole operation in Ukraine. He did not think that Ukraine would resist like that. He did not think that we would support Ukraine so that it could last that long. We will not lift the sanctions unless it decides an agreement with Ukraine, but not dictated peace, “Scholz added.

The German chancellor also said he had no plans to visit Kyiv after President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s scheduled visit was canceled due to Ukraine’s objections.
