German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue talks on the war in Ukraine on Thursday, German and French sources said.
“Germany and France demanded an immediate ceasefire from Russia” and “insisted that the only solution to the crisis was through negotiations between Ukraine and Russia,” German government sources said.
The Elysee Palace said in a statement that a telephone conversation had taken place, adding that European Union (EU) leaders would speak about the Ukrainian war at a summit in Versailles on Thursday evening.
“The three leaders agreed to maintain close contact in the coming days,” the statement said.
The first talks between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Russia since the beginning of the Russian attack on Turkey took place on Thursday.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba said no progress had been made in the talks.
His Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, meanwhile, said Moscow wanted to continue talks with Ukraine.
