That’s the way: Now it’s clear where the route of the U5 runs along and where the stops are – especially in the city center. Because Hamburg’s people from all corners of Hamburg can take the new U-Bahn line 5 right into the heart of the city – fast, comfortable and environmentally friendly.

“The new underground line U5 is a central project of the Senate to improve mobility and climate protection in Hamburg”, says Dr. Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of Hamburg, and highlights the advantages of the new U5: “The new underground In the Hamburg rapid transit system, rail creates many new connections and transfer options that shorten travel times on many routes. ”

Closing the gap in the city

Planning in the last few months has been particularly challenging in the densely built-up inner city area: to offer as many people as possible convenient access to the subway and to plan in a structurally feasible, operationally sensible and economically viable manner. Now the last piece of the puzzle completes the U5 route.

The result

Even more U5: Hamburg’s new lifeline gets with the U5 Jungfernstieg an additional stop in the heart of the city. This means that the city center is better connected and the U5 station Hauptbahnhof is relieved. Read more about the new stop here.

Use what is available: For the U5 station Hauptbahnhof the previously unused underground tubes at the Hauptbahnhof Nord stop, parallel to the tubes for the U2 / U4, will be converted. This saves resources, is faster and is structurally and economically more advantageous than a new building.

Am Stephansplatz the U5 stop will be northeast of the existing U1 stop and offers a quick and comfortable change to the U1 as well as to the S-Bahn as well as regional and long-distance traffic at Dammtor station. Advantages of this variant: among other things, less impairment of the area (including Planten un Blomen, traffic) and a shorter closure of the U1 during construction.

In St. Georg the U5 should stop at the transition between Langer Reihe and Barcastraße (junction Lohmühlenstraße). In doing so, it not only connects the patients and employees of the AK St. Georg centrally. It also offers residents and visitors of the lower Lange Reihe a rapid transit connection and creates access to the Outer Alster. By relieving the load on bus line 6 with the U5 and relocating public transport underground, this also promotes the quality of life in the district.

Am Borgweg the U5 is supposed to stop at the stop variant under Barmbeker Straße. With this location, it offers a better transition to the U3 and even more residents convenient access to the U3 and U5. Further advantages: including a shorter closure of the U3 during construction as well as protection of the tree population in Borgweg.

The bottom line is: According to the current state of planning, the U5 stops 23 stops on around 24 kilometers route, across Hamburg, from west to east. It binds you 150,000 Hamburg residents for the first time or better as well as large employers (including UKE), office locations (including City Nord, inner city) or leisure locations (including arenas). Every working day around 300,000 people with the drive a new line – and use the latest technology: it will be the first subway line in Hamburg to run autonomously, i.e. driverless.

The U5 section from Bramfeld to City Nord is currently still in the planning approval process. Construction is planned to begin at the end of 2021. Further construction towards the city center is planned from the mid-1920s. More precise statements can be made in the course of the design planning.

The U5 creates valuable transfer options to existing U, S and long-distance train lines (see stops circled in red). Please click here to enlarge the graphic.

So it goes on now

In the next, in-depth planning step, the so-called draft planning, the results for the U5 section from City Nord to Arenas / Volkspark are examined and checked in more detail. Many questions, for example about construction logistical areas, the construction schedule or the design of the stops, can only be answered at a later point in time.

Talking to each other

From Borgweg via the city center to the west of Hamburg: In the past two years, the HOCHBAHN has intensively involved Hamburg residents in the planning along the U5 route in various ways. Whether on site in discussions with clubs and associations, at district festivals, in committee meetings and district conferences. Two representatives are also available as direct contacts.

At the same time, 17 online dialogues offered the opportunity to contribute suggestions and ideas from home. Not only in times of the pandemic an offer that was used with commitment. A total of 1,440 articles and comments illustrate what moves people along the route. Online dialogues about the U5 station Gärtnerstraße or Stephansplatz testify to the constructive dialog with each other. Both online and on site, the HOCHBAHN will continue on this path in the future.
