Wolfsburg – Sports director Jörg Schmadtke defended VfL Wolfsburg against what he thought was excessive criticism after the Champions League elimination against OSC Lille.

“VfL Wolfsburg is not the disgrace of German football.” Such statements are disrespectful, said the 57-year-old before the Bundesliga home game against VfB Stuttgart in a Sky interview.

The Wolfsburg had lost their last group game against the French champions on Wednesday evening with 1: 3. Despite the recent four defeats in a row, Schmadtke also stood in front of coach Florian Kohfeldt, who was only signed at the end of October. “Unfortunately, he has to pay for God’s things that are in the past,” said the sports director, referring to Kohfeldt’s predecessor Mark van Bommel. “We wanted to try things and develop them further.” Unfortunately that didn’t work. He doesn’t let anything get near Kohfeldt. Such a discussion would be dishonest and out of order. ”

Schmadtke will probably extend his expiring contract until 2023 in winter. «I’m in conversation with our chairman of the supervisory board. If he believes that the constellation fits and I can continue to help – then there is a likelihood that I will extend a year, “said the football manager, who has been working in Wolfsburg since 2018.
