Schlotterbeck’s emotional farewell: “I played my soul out”

In the lost cup final, Freiburg national player Nico Schlotterbeck stood out again – kicker grade 1. The 22-year-old was disappointed and wistful after his last game for the south Baden team, but already has his sights set on the first goal with his new club Borussia Dortmund.

Gave everything for Freiburg until the end: Nico Schlotterbeck.

The memories made Nico Schlotterbeck wistful. “The club has grown so dear to me,” he began, enthusing: “I met a lot of friends and played my first games with my brother, today even in the DFB Cup final. We made our family proud.” He summed up the review in true Schlotterbeck style: “If someone had told me that a few years ago, I would have punched them.”

Luckily that wasn’t necessary, instead the central defender enjoyed an incredible playing time and developed from a backup player to a national team player. In the final he showed his best performance of the season against RB Leipzig (2: 4 on penalties) – kicker grade 1. Schlotterbeck defended as usual bravely, aggressively, he made no mistakes except for a candle and a loss of the ball, which he ironed out himself. But he repeatedly rushed dangerously into the Leipzig half, went ahead as the leader and only pinched at the point. “I didn’t have the balls to take penalties,” he admitted. For that, Brother Keven hit the ball in the net. It did not help. For the twelfth time a pair of brothers played together in the final and for the fifth time the pair went home without a trophy.

“I played my last game for the sports club, gave everything and played my soul out,” said the left-footed player on “Sky”. After three years in Breisgau and a loan season at Union Berlin, his move to Dortmund is only logical. Schlotterbeck outgrew Freiburg within a year. He experienced “a great last year” with the team around head coach Christian Streich. In addition to the cup final, the SCF also reached 6th place and the Europa League. A historic season – also thanks to “Schlotti”. The failure at RB disappointed him accordingly, but he felt “still proud of the fans and what we have achieved”.

Schlotterbeck’s new attempt with BVB

Schlotterbeck showed endgame qualities in the Olympic Stadium, and he particularly likes to let it rip on the big stage. With BVB, the blond boy by choice will even get involved in the Champions League in the future, but things are currently changing at the new employer. “I didn’t think much about Marco Rose’s dismissal, even if it came as a surprise to me,” admitted Schlotterbeck. But he was convinced of the “Vision Borussia Dortmund” and therefore decided to go black and yellow. You have to live with coach changes in football. Nevertheless, he always keeps an eye on the trophy and announces on ARD: “Hopefully the club will find a good solution that we can bring this thing to Dortmund next year.”
