Schleswig-Holstein Lower Saxony Hamburg: Weather in the north: rain, storms – and almost summer temperatures

As of: October 9th, 2024 3:05 p.m

The foothills of the previous hurricane “Kirk” reach northern Germany. There will be a lot of rain on Thursday with very mild temperatures. Strong squalls are also expected, especially on the coasts.

The remnants of Hurricane Kirk are likely to appear in northern Germany as a “full-blown autumn storm, but not a major hurricane,” said weather expert Frank Böttcher in an interview with NDR Info. “First of all, we get a lot of rain.” Because the low pressure area contains very warm air. “It’s soaked with moisture that wants to come out.”

The rainy area in western Germany will move in on Thursday night. “The Emsland will be very wet,” said Böttcher. 40 to 60 liters of rain per square meter are possible towards Meppen. As the front continues to move northeast, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg will still receive around 30 liters of rain per square meter.

Almost summer temperatures again

Hurricanes are generally able to bring along all types of weather – even in autumn it can be almost summer-like warm. “The low pressure area is bringing in warm air, and in Lower Saxony it will be up to 20 degrees warmer,” said Böttcher.

Severe squalls and storm surge possible

After the rain comes the wind: From Thursday morning onwards it will start to “blow properly” in southern and western Lower Saxony before it becomes stormy throughout the north. Severe squalls are possible locally.

There could also be a storm surge in Hamburg, but it shouldn’t be too high. Nevertheless: “The 1.50 meter mark could be exceeded,” said Böttcher. This would mean the fish market would be under water again.

Storm strengths: From calm to hurricane

“Nothing unusual in terms of wind strength”

The German Weather Service (DWD) also expects strong to stormy winds in the next few days, especially at sea. Gusts of 65 to 85 km/h are possible on the North and Baltic Sea coasts on Thursday morning. “Nothing unusual in terms of wind strength,” said Josef Kantuzer, meteorologist from the DWD, when asked by NDR Info. While the stormy gusts of wind end inland in the evening, they continue in a weaker form on the coast. A slow but steady decrease can also be expected on the coasts on Friday night.

According to the forecast, it will be partly clear and partly cloudy across the north on Friday. Rain showers are to be expected between the North and Baltic Seas. Temperatures often only reach ten to 14 degrees. It remains stormy at sea. On Saturday night the temperatures drop to four to seven degrees, and at the sea to ten degrees. The sun should come out again occasionally at the weekend. Weather expert Böttcher also predicts that the weather will generally calm down.
