The Kiellauf in the state capital was overshadowed by a death on Sunday: According to police, three people had to be resuscitated because of the heat – one runner could not be saved.
The 37-year-old died on the route. In addition, an unusually high number of people suffered circulatory collapse. Rescue workers had to help 90 times. Something like this had never happened before. Many participants simply did not recognize their limits, said a spokesman for the police to NDR Schleswig-Holstein. The Kiel fire department also reported an unusually high number of heat-related operations in the city and moved its command vehicle and several ambulances to the city center in order to set up an operations structure there.
The weather had never been so warm at the Kiel Run before, said the emergency services. The organizers had considered canceling the run because the emergency services were overwhelmed. A total of 35 people – runners and spectators – were taken to hospital. Around 9,000 runners took part in the 36th Kiel Run.
