They are power hungry. The unity of the opposition stopped them, but it does not erase the gravity of the attempt.”
And to think that Schlein had warned her. When, on Monday evening, the dem leader understands that any possibility of mediation is reduced to zero and that the tenant of Palazzo Chigi would have continued straight ahead, she picks up the phone and calls her. As had already happened in the Middle East in flames, to ask for a more incisive commitment from the government on the ceasefire. «Look, you can’t do it alone, postpone it and let’s discuss it», the summary of the conversation, calm in tone, very harsh in content. «If the Constitution provides for a quorum of two thirds, which then becomes three fifths, it is because in the composition of the guarantee bodies the contribution of the opposition is needed in order to identify the best profiles and ensure an overall balance», insists Schlein.
Meloni tries to push back, to place the responsibility for his forcing on the deafness of the centre-left. But the opponent doesn’t listen to reason: «We learned about your blitz from the newspapers, so far you have never looked for us, nor did you have the intention of involving us. Something unprecedented. I’m not saying that dialogue is indispensable, it’s written in the Charter”, he protests. To no avail. The prime minister refuses to come to terms. Sure to reach your destination. As it turned out, however, it wasn’t.
And now the secretary of the Democratic Party is the first to regret it. For her, what happened in the Chamber is a wound for the institutions. «Everyone knows that to guarantee the functioning of the Court it is necessary for the majority and the opposition to talk to each other, it has always been like this, the constitutional judges have always been elected with large majorities, thanks to the patient and loyal confrontation between all the political forces», he reflects loud voice. «But yesterday (Monday, ndr) we found a wall. “The impression is that they wanted to carry on regardless,” Schlein cuts short. “And it is a serious problem if, in a crucial passage like this, they did not consider it their duty to open a channel with the first opposition force.”

However, a question remains: why did Meloni, knowing she didn’t have the numbers, go straight and risk crashing? “Due to arrogance and lack of sense on the part of the institutions”, the Dem leader replies sharply. “We hope it serves as a lesson for them, that they finally understand that the maximum constitutional guarantees cannot be played with.” Hubris blinds, is the message. «I hope that the model is not that of Trump: if this were the case, they would find the opposition united to block their path.” So don’t have any illusions. And they should also stop claiming that the non-vote served to cover up the divisions of the centre-left: “Said on the day when we were solidified it makes one smile a bit”, quips Schlein. “How much hypocrisy, it was enough to open the dialogue to avoid this disgrace.”
Do you know that they will try again? The lady of the Nazarene darkens, she thinks about it for a moment: «And we will be more united than ever», she bets without hesitation. “It’s a promise: if they don’t change direction, they’ll crash again.”
