There are plans to double the number of security guards at all Portuguese airports. But before that is arranged, travelers have to prepare for long waiting times.
Too many travelers
Union president Acacio Pereira says Lisbon airport is old and cannot cope with the huge increase in passenger numbers after the corona pandemic.
He accuses ANA, the company that manages the airport, for not properly spreading the flights to Lisbon. ANA had put the blame for the problems on the border security and immigration service. It would not have provided enough staff.

Pereira thinks hiring new border guards this month will not solve all the problems. Lisbon airport will also not be able to handle as many travelers with extra guards as it was last weekend.
Airports throughout Europe are struggling to cope with the flow of travelers after corona. During the pandemic, the necessary personnel moved to other sectors. In addition, the travel sector is recovering faster than expected.
