ANNOUNCEMENTS•
The number of travelers who flew via Schiphol doubled last year. In 2022, Schiphol had 52.5 million departing, arriving and transfer passengers. In the corona year 2021 it was 25.5 million.
Despite the doubling, Schiphol is still not at the old level before the corona virus outbreak. In 2019, Schiphol welcomed 71.1 million passengers.
Chaos due to lack of personnel
Partly due to staff shortages, the airport has been overwhelmed with the need for flights since the May holidays, resulting in long queues. Something the House of Representatives and the unions have already warned about.
The great chaos with long lines at security checkpoints was attributed by Schiphol to the large shortage of staff and not to its own shortcomings, writes NH News. In the midst of the ongoing chaos, Schiphol CEO Dick Benschop resigned in September. Ruud Sondag has since succeeded him.
New chaos
According to the FNV union, there is still a serious staff shortage at the airport and therefore the union fears a new chaos. Schiphol won’t be ready before the summer, says Joost van Doesburg, FNV campaign manager.
The airport will soon organize a job market together with the airlines to make up for the shortages.
Since the summer of 2021, a limitation on the number of departing passengers and flights has been in place to avoid overflowing the departure halls. This emergency measure will apply until the end of March. Next week, Schiphol will announce whether enough staff have been hired to lift the restriction from April.
