Within a few years, passengers flying from Schiphol will be able to register at home via an app to speed up passport control. Home registration should prevent long lines of people waiting at the airport.
A trial is currently underway with travelers flying from Canada to the Netherlands. They upload a facial photo at home and fill in information about their trip. At the airport, they only have to hold their passport at the detection gate to pass through. “This will be the new normal,” acting Schiphol CEO Robert Carsouw said.
Outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Justice and Security) also envisions passengers doing part of their passport checks at home in the coming years. He said this on Thursday during a demonstration of the new control system at Schiphol.
The experiment with home registration will end at the end of March. The findings will be passed on to the European Commission, which is developing a new digital travel document for all member states.
Border control in the European Union without a passport remains a thing of the future for the time being, says Colonel Elwin van der Molen of the military police. “A lot is already possible technologically. But then the Member States must work together. That is where the biggest obstacles lie.”
