Schiphol airport sees gradual recovery

In 2021 Royal Schiphol Group again suffered a loss of hundreds of millions of euros with its activities, but the company is seeing a gradual recovery.

Especially during the summer months, more passengers traveled through the company’s airports; Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Eindhoven Airport. In total, the number of passengers in 2021 amounted to 29 million. In 2020 that was still 23.5 million. Before corona, in 2019, 80.5 million passengers traveled through the airports.

287 million euros loss, but still profit

The loss from the company’s activities was smaller than a year earlier: 287 million euros. In the first corona year that was still more than half a billion euros.

On paper, at the very bottom, there was a profit of 105 million euros due to a number of windfalls, such as government wage support (84 million euros), the results of real estate investments (69 million euros) and the appreciation of shares in the parent company. from Paris airport (252 million euros).

Although the company expects the recovery to continue in 2022, it is not expected that the number of passengers will return to pre-corona levels before 2024.

Yesterday, airline Air France-KLM released the results for 2021. That company also saw recovery, although it again recorded a loss of billions. The last quarter in particular, when America reopened to travelers, resulted in a better result at the airline.
