SCHIEDAM – On World Alzheimer’s Day yesterday, a special walking route was used in Stricklede Park. This is the Forget-me-not way, for people with depression (partner).

The path is made up of large slabs with forget-me-nots on them, the flower that symbolizes depression. This makes it easy to follow the path. Along the way, walkers can answer questions that will trigger their memory. From now on, these questions can be asked at De 5 Molens. Physical exercises can also be done along the way.

The forget-me-not walk is an initiative of Seniorenwelzijn in collaboration with Alzheimer Nederland. Petra Zwang, consultant, opened the way yesterday, together with Johan Sevenhuizen from Alzheimer Nederland.

Senior worker Miriam van Boxtel started the walk: “Exercise and social connections are great if you’re living with depression. It stimulates the brain and can ensure you stay independent for longer. I regularly walk through the Strickledepark with partners in The Memory Compass, a meeting place for and with people with early memory problems and their loved ones. I think it’s great that we’ve now created a Forget-me-nots circuit there!”

The walk is not only for people with dementia but local residents are also welcome to walk the path. Van Boxtel: “We hope it will be a meeting place and lead to even more connections in the community.”

PS After the original posting, this article was added with the words of Miriam van Boxtel.
