Berlin’s Senator for Education Sandra Scheeres has opposed the cancellation of the Abitur exams in the corona pandemic.
“Our Berlin high school graduates still have a week of lessons, after which the adjustments and simplifications that we have already decided will apply to the Abitur exams,” said the SPD politician on April 4, 2021. “It would not be right to cancel these Abitur exams. Young people want an Abitur that is recognized throughout Germany and abroad. ”

Scheeres was responding to a move by the Education and Science Union (GEW). “Should the infection rate increase as dramatically as the third wave in other neighboring European countries suggests, the countries must react flexibly and refrain from testing,” said GEW boss Marlis Tepe to the editorial network Germany. “Then, for example, the achievements from the lessons could be used as the basis for the grading.”
