Scharbeutz: World Champion gives courses in the Bay of Lübeck
Even the multiple world champion in stand-up paddling and surfing Sonni Hönscheid, who is otherwise around the world, will come to the Bay of Lübeck this weekend to bring her beginners and advanced athletes closer to her sport on the Baltic Sea.
“The conditions for stand-up paddling are great here because the Baltic Sea is mostly calm and therefore easy for beginners,” says Sonni Hönscheid, Germany’s best stand-up paddler. She has been on the water in Scharbeutz several times and raves: “And if the wind blows, it is also exciting for advanced skiers.” In 2008 she was on the SUP board for the first time. No matter where she is on the water in the world: “The environment is different every time. You feel free, it can be in Hawaii or in Scharbeutz, ”she says. The feeling is the same.
Stand-up paddling strains all muscles
On Sunday, August 2nd, the multiple world champion will be visiting the SUP station Scharbeutz and interested parties have the opportunity to improve their paddling technique in a course. Because gliding over the water with a stand-up paddling board is not only fun, but also replaces any training in the gym.
“With the right technique, all muscles are strained,” says Sonni Hönscheid. Then you work with the strength of the whole body, from the foot to the fingertips. The 39-year-old Sylt will teach all of this to beginners and advanced learners in a theoretical and practical part. Cost: 59 euros. Times: 11 a.m., 1.30 p.m. and 4 p.m. one and a half hours each. Information and registration on phone 0174/390 60 41 and www.luebecker-bucht-ostsee.de. There are still places left.
Paddle towards the sun on the Sunrise tour
The Bay of Lübeck is developing more and more into a water sports paradise, less than 100 kilometers from Hamburg. “The water sports schools in the Bay of Lübeck offer courses for beginners as well as for experienced water sports enthusiasts. Whether with the surf, kite or SUP board, a sailboat, catamaran or canoe – everyone who wants to try out and work out on the Baltic Sea will get their money’s worth here, ”says Doris Wilmer-Huperz from the tourism agency Bay of Lübeck.
On Saturday, August 22nd, the Sunrise tour paddled towards the sun at 9.45 a.m. to enjoy the calm of the morning on the water and welcome the new day. This SUP tour is suitable for beginners and advanced. It starts at the pier. Afterwards there is a coffee together. Cost: 19 euros, including board and coffee. The number of participants is limited, so registration at [email protected] is recommended.
The latest trend in water sports is wing surfing
Every Tuesday (4th, 11th, 18th and 25th August) the SUP board starts at 6 p.m. from the Scharbeutz pier to spend the evening on the water and then a cocktail in the beach lounge enjoy. This sundowner tour costs 19 euros including rental board. Registration and information on phone 0174/390 60 41.

One is innovative at the surf station Sailandsurf in Pelzerhaken, which offers the latest trend: wing surfing. Surfers use a wing without lines or a fixed connection to the board to be drawn over the water. Wingsurfing is a mixture of kite and windsurfing, where the surfer stands with a kind of kite, the wing, on a surf, SUP or foil board.
