Schalke’s First Half of the Season: Resignation, Struggles, and Hopes for Improvement

The first half of the season

Coach Thomas Reis had to resign early in the season. In addition to the lack of results, disagreements with the team also led to the separation. This was followed by two defeats under interim coach Matthias Kreutzer and a 0:3 at Karlsruher SC when new coach Karel Geraerts made his debut. Even under him, Schalke’s ups and downs continued until the team seemed to stabilize somewhat towards the end.

A lot of work awaits Geraerts, especially in the defensive area. His team conceded 35 goals in the first half of the season – only Kaiserslautern and Osnabrück conceded more. It is hopeful that Geraerts has apparently recognized this problem and switched from his preferred back three to a back four. Schalke managed to keep a clean slate in two of the last three games before the winter break.

The preparation

The positive end to the year gave the Knappen a boost – the mood during the training camp in Albufeira, Portugal, was correspondingly positive. “The team performed well and presented themselves as a unit,” said the head coach. The effort was also right.
