Schalke 04 celebrated a very important victory in the promotion battle in added time. Since Werder Bremen made a mistake in the parallel game, the Royal Blues are again leaders.
The struggle for promotion comes to a head in the 2nd Bundesliga. FC Schalke 04 won 2-1 in Sandhausen on Friday evening – and thus passed leaders Werder Bremen, who lost 3-2 to Holstein Kiel despite a 2-0 lead. Top scorer Simon Terodde gave his team the lead on Friday evening (71st minute) before SVS captain Dennis Diekmeier equalized (83rd). In added time, the Royal Blue attacker was there again. Schalke can complete their promotion at home against FC St. Pauli next week.
The Kiezkicker from Hamburg meanwhile missed out on an important win and only gambled away a three-pointer in the 1-1 draw against Nuremberg. Daniel-Kofi Kyereh gave Hamburg the lead from the penalty spot in front of 29,546 spectators in the sold-out Millerntor Stadium. Substitute Taylan Duman (90+2) from Nuremberg equalized in injury time.
SV Werder Bremen also experienced an unbelievably bitter evening, which for a short time already looked like an almost certain climber. In Bremen, the top scorers Niclas Füllkrug (2nd) and Marvin Ducksch (23rd, hand penalty according to video evidence) were initially successful against Kiel, but two own goals by Füllkrug (45th + 2nd) and Anthony Jung (71st) ensured the equalizer. Julian Korb (85th) then decided the game in favor of the guests.
That’s how the other games went
Much further down in the table, Fortuna Düsseldorf made it clear to stay up. Daniel Thioune’s team won 3-1 (2-0) at 1. FC Heidenheim and, with 41 points, can no longer slip to the relegation place.
Hannover 96 is very close to being rescued. Lower Saxony won 2-0 (1-0) against Karlsruher SC and increased the gap to Dynamo Dresden and the relegation rank to nine points – the Saxons can only do so in their three remaining games tie on points.
Jakub Piotrowski (20th), Felix Klaus (33rd) and Christoph Klarer (56th) secured relegation for Düsseldorf, which is still unbeaten under Thioune. Maurice Malone’s interim connection (47th) for Heidenheim was of no value. Center forward Hendrik Weydandt (25th) with a header and Maximilian Beier (90th + 4) scored for Hannover, which is now looking to Dresden on Saturday: Competitor Dynamo is under pressure there against Jahn Regensburg.
