The race for promotion is in full swing in the 2nd Bundesliga. Schalke is slightly behind. This is how striker Simon Terodde assesses the situation.
Frustration after the bitter bankruptcy at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Winner of the match day after beating SC Paderborn 2-0. Another setback recently due to two points that were left behind in the 1-1 draw in Karlsruhe. In the context of the table, the last few weeks from the point of view of the FC Schalke 04 a little roller coaster ride.
Torjäger described as “extremely important”. Simon Terodde hence the home game on Saturday against Hansa Rostock (1.30 p.m., RS live ticker). The gap to second and third place is currently three points, leaders Werder Bremen are four points away. In order not to let the direct contact break off for the time being, a win against the Rostockers, who are threatened with relegation, is almost mandatory.
Terodde also sees room for improvement: “We still have room for improvement and want to climb a few places. We have the potential.” The 34-year-old also said in the media round on Thursday: “It doesn’t matter whether we’re first or second now – but at the end of the season.”
There are still ten match days to go, with Schalke playing half of the games in their own arena. “We have to make sure that we win our home games,” emphasizes the 16-goal man. If this succeeds, “we’ll be in a situation at the end of May where we might be playing in front of 60,000 spectators. It’s important that we still have the chance to get promoted.”
What would help Schalke enormously with this project: A winning streak. The Royal Blues only lost one of their last eight matches. However, there was only one success in a row during this period. “If you get into the rhythm and get three or four wins in a row,” S04 coach knows Dimitrios Grammozis“then make up a lot of ground.”
Especially since the competition from Bremen and Hamburg is currently much more consistent in its results. Werder even got 25 out of a possible 27 points from the last nine games.
Schalke’s best series, on the other hand, is a bit behind. Last fall, the Grammozis team won four times in a row. Starting point of the successful run: The first leg against the upcoming opponent Hansa Rostock.
