Schalke remains winless: 3:4 against Greuther Fürth

FC Schalke 04 also lost its second game in the 2nd Bundesliga under its new coach Kees van Wonderen. In the Dutchman’s home debut, the Gelsenkirchen team lost to SpVgg Greuther Fürth 3:4 (1:3). While the Franconians celebrated a successful dress rehearsal for the DFB Cup game on Tuesday (8:45 p.m.) at SV Jahn Regensburg under interim coach Leonard Haas, Schalke will play against the Bundesliga club on the same day (6:00 p.m.) with the burden of four games without a win in a row FC Augsburg.

Roberto Massimo (23rd minute) and Damian Michalski (27th) gave Fürth the lead with a double strike. Max Grüger (32nd) reduced the deficit for Schalke before Massimo (39th) restored the two-goal lead with his second goal. The hosts ended the game outnumbered after Felipe Sanchez was shown a yellow-red card in the 48th minute. Noel Futkeu (62nd) increased the score to 4:1 after preparatory work from the strong Branimir Hrgota and Luca Itter. The Schalke goals from Paul Seguin (78th) and Taylan Bulut (90th + 2) did not bring about a turnaround.

Greuther Fürth separated from coach Alexander Zorniger and sports director Rachid Azzouzi after the 4-0 defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg. At Schalke, the team led by Haas surprised with their determination and accuracy. In contrast, the hosts, who lost the first game under van Wonderen 0-1 at Hannover 96, revealed worrying defensive weaknesses. Especially with Massimo’s second goal after a remarkable assist from Itter, Schalke’s central defense was not up to par.
