Bundesliga away games are currently one of the more painful experiences for fans of FC Schalke 04. On Sunday afternoon, the miners went home with a 0-4 pack against SC Freiburg. Thomas Reis demands a different face from his team in the upcoming duel with Werder Bremen.
With a point win in Freiburg, FC Schalke 04 could have taken a big step towards staying up in the league, but in reality the royal blues were still well served with four goals conceded in Breisgau. “You can be happy that it didn’t get that high,” said head coach Thomas Reis DAZN and criticized the rate of duels and behavior with the ball: “We know that we have a lot of one-on-one situations. We lost the duels seriously today. If you see what we’ve done with our possession of the ball, then you can here don’t pass. Everyone has to look at their own noses.”
“We Fell Again”
There was no sign of the spirit that Schalke displayed in the 5-2 win against Hertha BSC on matchday 28. Rather, Reis was reminded of the last away game when he and his family lost 2-0 at TSG Hoffenheim: “It wasn’t a good away game again. You’ve come down to earth. We fell again.”
Reis fights for relegation
In the coming training week it is important to “regenerate and find the guys who can perform better against Werder Bremen (Saturday, 6.30 p.m.)”, announced Reis. After Werder, Mainz, Bayern, Frankfurt and Leipzig are waiting for Schalke, the rest of the program looks like a mammoth task. Giving up is out of the question for Reis: “Everything is still possible, even if today’s performance doesn’t help.” But the coach also knows that staying up in the league requires better performances: “We fit in seamlessly with our competitors with the result and the way we played. Of course we wanted to take advantage of that, it’s no use if the competition plays like that and we play games like that ourselves.”
