It’s completely utopian, but which players would Schalke coach Thomas Reis buy if money wasn’t an issue? He has a top candidate.
Gelsenkirchen – FC Schalke 04 has to bake small rolls on the transfer market. In the current transfer window, expenses of around 3.8 million euros are offset by income of 19.35 million euros. However, there is not much budget for further newcomers, the club is plagued by liabilities of around 180 million euros (as of March 15, 2023).

But what if money were no longer an issue at FC Schalke 04? If the S04 as the “heart of the Ruhr area”, as the chairman of the supervisory board Axel Hefer described the club in the spring, could freely use the transfer market?
Schalke trainer Thomas Reis answered this question in the podcast “Phrasen Mäher”. Bild. The 49-year-old identified a top candidate that he would like to sign with the Royal Blues: “Then I would choose Cristiano Ronaldo for my wife Carina, who played in Bochum herself until the summer,” said the coach (all S04 transfer news at RUHR24).

Thomas Reis is also fascinated by Cristiano Ronaldo: “You don’t get a body like him if you lift weights once a week and otherwise just look at the irons. I find the greed that he exudes sensational.”

The 38-year-old Portuguese has been playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia since January 2023. Its market value is currently from transfermarkt.de estimated at 15 million euros. For comparison: The entire Schalke squad should only be worth around 28 million euros.
Schalke coach Thomas Reis rejects Neymar: “Modric and Mbappe would be more interesting”
Thomas Reis would not like to see a player at S04: “Neymar would not fit in with Schalke in comparison.” The Brazilian superstar from Paris St. Germain is known for his eccentric nature. That would go down less well in the Ruhr area and especially at the Kumpel- und Malocherklub in Gelsenkirchen.
Instead, Thomas Reis would have two other candidates in his sights: Neymar’s current teammate Kylian Mbappe (PSG) and Luka Modric (Real Madrid). But the coach is certain: “We would certainly need a little more money then.” Kylian Mbappe’s market value alone is estimated at 180 million euros – as high as FC Schalke 04’s current liabilities.
