Schachmann wins Paris-Nice – La Liberté

Maximilian Schachmann (Bora) won Saturday Paris-Nice. This race was the last for the international peloton before a break of an unknown duration due to the coronavirus.

Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) won the 7th stage of the “race to the sun” in the La Colmiane resort, which ended a day earlier than expected. The Colombian won a prestigious victory, alone, for the sole arrival at the top of the event.

In the final ranking, the German champion Maximilian Schachmann (24) beat the Belgian Tiesj Benoot by 18 seconds and the Colombian Sergio Higuita by 59 seconds. Italian Vincenzo Nibali took 4th place, ahead of Frenchman Thibaut Pinot.

Schachmann had to fight to the end to limit the gap on Benoot, who went on the attack in the last 1,500 meters. He is the fifth German runner to register his name after Rolf Wolfshohl, Andreas Klöden, Jörg Jäksche and Tony Martin, the last to win in 2011.

The last stage, between Nice and La Colmiane (166.5 km), was long animated by a breakaway of six runners (De Gendt, Alaphilippe, Edet, Paret-Peintre, Bettiol, Pérez). The Belgian Thomas De Gendt took the lead at the foot of the final ascent, before the last 15 km. It was only overflowed 3 kilometers from the finish.
