Jakarta –
A United Airlines 777 left Hawaii in December. And, the plane was freefalling into the Pacific Ocean for 21 seconds shortly after takeoff.
Launch CNN, Friday (17/2/2023), the incident made the plane reach a height of about 243 meters above sea level. Flight tracker data shows it.
Neither United nor the Federal Aviation Administration indicated that any passengers were injured on flight 1722 on December 18.
The plane picked up speed as it descended at 1,425 feet before climbing back up from Kahului on the island of Maui.
The passenger, Rod Williams II, said the plane appeared to be flying normally at first. But he said the plane was climbing at an alarming rate for a few seconds.
“It was like climbing to the top of a roller coaster. That’s how I felt at the time. There were a number of people screaming on the plane. Everyone could tell that something was out of the ordinary, or at least it wasn’t normal,” Williams said.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it would investigate the incident instead of saying it had no plans to.
The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident but has yet to share the results of its investigation. They say that security investigations cannot be shared because the confidentiality of this program is critical to its success.
The NTSB usually shares the results of its investigations with the public. The agency tweeted that a preliminary report is expected in 2-3 weeks.
United said it was conducting an investigation with the FAA and the pilots’ union who disclosed the additional training said the investigation was ongoing.
The pilots have a combined 25,000 hours of flight time.
“The United Airlines flight crew reported the incident to the FAA as part of its voluntary safety reporting program. The agency reviewed the incident and took appropriate action,” the FAA said.
Although the weather at the time of the incident was unclear, the National Weather Service reported that it had recorded a record daily rainfall for Kahului. The incident, which is only coming to light now, was first reported by the website Air Current.
Williams and his family were sitting near the back of the plane when the Boeing 777 plunged into a terrifying crash shortly after takeoff from Hawaii’s Kahului Airport.
He said the plane then dived dramatically, dipping downwards for about eight to 10 seconds before climbing sharply again and resuming its normal flight.
