Scarlett Johansson’s White Suit in Ghost in the Shell and Controversies: Exploring the Stage Three Thermoptic Suit and Casting Issues

Many people mainly know actress Scarlett Johansson from her role as Natasha Romanoff alias Black Widow in the Marvel film Black Widow and its many predecessors. She mainly wears a black outfit in the films. In another Hollywood movie, not so long ago, she was dressed all in white.

Johansson starred in the 2017 science fiction film Ghost in the Shell by director Rupert Sanders. In it she plays the character Major Mira Killian, a cyborg. She wears a striking white suit that may look even better than the black suit in the Marvel films.

Stage Three pak
The suit is called the ‘??Stage Three Thermoptic Suit’ and fits tightly around the protagonist’s body. The suit is made of silicone and nylon and also has gloves, shoes and a holster.

The suit was sold at an auction in 2018, with an expected proceeds of around ten thousand dollars. And that is of course not much, if you look at what other film attributes yield. Incidentally, the film was a financial flop after grossing $170 million worldwide. Paramount Pictures is said to have lost around 60 million on the film.

Controversial film
The manga adaptation was also controversial. Johansson was cast in the role of an original Asian character. This is also called ‘whitewashing’. Ghost in the Shell is certainly not the last film to do this, but Hollywood has clearly been more careful about it since then.
