Pau Cubarsí was the focus of attention on the return trip to Belgrade. And his spectacular scar on his face, which required up to ten stitches, left no one indifferent. The center back took it with good humor to be the center of everyone’s attention, especially his teammates who did not stop making jokes with him, to the point that they called him ‘Scarface’, referring to the famous Al Pacino film, who played a violent Cuban drug trafficker making his way in Miami and who sported a visible scar on his face.
Cubarsí’s main concern is whether he will be available for Sunday’s game against Real Sociedad. The center-back wants to be there, but the club is cautious, aware that if the scar is still very tender there are serious risks that it could open during some part of the match. It will be the evolution of the injury in the coming days that will determine whether or not he will finally travel to San Sebastián. In any case, as AS has learned, it has been ruled out that he plays with any type of facial protection: since he does not suffer any type of bone injury, its use is inadvisable. That does not mean that you have to play with some dressing that covers your scar, in the event that your participation is finally given the green light.
The truth is that the injury was more dramatic than anything else. When the center back fell to the ground, after receiving Kunic’s kick, his teammates were scared to see Cubarsi’s face completely bloody. A first visual inspection by the doctors confirmed that it was an open wound resulting from a blow with the aluminum studs, which had torn the skin. After suturing the scar with ten stitches, Cubarsí himself reassured the fans on social networks by posting a photo of the damage that had been done to his battered face.
If it is finally decided to reserve Cubarsí this Sunday, Flick would have two clear alternatives in the central axis to accompany Íñigo Martínez: resort to the young youth squad Sergi Domínguez, as he already did in Belgrade, or relocate Koundé as central, and then give the ownership to Héctor Fort on the right wing. Either of the two has already been used by the German coach this season.
