Scarcity of Sriracha Sauce from Thailand: Customers Protest Against Different Taste

Sriracha sauce from Thailand is reportedly rare. After returning to massive production, customers protested against this sauce because it tasted different.

Sriracha sauce from Thailand, made from a mixture of red chilies, garlic, vinegar, salt and sugar, is very popular. In fact, this food complement with sour, sweet and spicy flavors is much sought after by buyers in specialist Asian grocery stores and large supermarkets in California.

Due to the scarcity of chilies, sriracha experienced a shortage. The impact is that many people are determined to sell their sriracha supplies at sky-high and unreasonable prices.

Recently, Huy Fong Foods, the producer of sriracha, said that the shortage of the sauce was caused by the supply of chili which had worsened since April 2022. After going through difficult times, sriracha was finally produced again, but its presence was questioned by its audience.

Reported in an Instagram account upload @nextshark (25/10) Huy Fong Foods announced the return of sriracha production. Even though they are still in limited quantities, their chili supplies have made it possible to start production and fill the shelves in shops.

“Production is very limited but we are back! Thank you for your support and patience,” wrote the official Instagram account @huyfongfoods in a post featuring a production video.

However, a different view can be seen in the comments column of the upload. Many netizens claim to have tried the new sriracha but it tastes much different from the previous concoction.

Starting from the color, taste, and appearance, it is considered ‘fake’ Sriracha because it is not the same as the previous product. Many netizens still say that sriracha will continue to be rare if the sauce is not made to improve its sauce like the old one.

“This new product is more orange, sweet and spicy. The original product is redder, thicker and has an OG (original) taste. It’s really not the same. We still have two bottles of the old production sriracha at home and are thinking about putting them in a museum,” wrote one netizen.

“Near my house there is a supermarket that sells them side by side with different prices between the two. So you really see the appearance of the new and the old,” continued another netizen.

“I have several bottles of this new sriracha, unfortunately the taste is different. It tastes spicier and more unpleasant than the previous one,” continued another netizen.

Meanwhile, many netizens also suspect that the scarcity of chilies as a raw material for sriracha is related to the supplier. Business cooperation between Huy Fong Foods and suppliers for 28 years has made shortages difficult to overcome.
