Scape Technologies: Facebook buys positioning specialists

According to information from US magazines like techcrunch Facebook has a majority stake in the British startup Scape Technologies Bought. At least 75 percent of the shares in Scape should now belong to Facebook, the price for it should have been around 40 million US dollars. Facebook did not directly confirm the process in a comment, but it did not deny it either – just said in general that you buy small companies from time to time without always wanting to discuss it publicly.

Scape is working on technologies that are of interest, among other things, for augmented reality systems. The aim is to use the self-developed vision engine to determine the position in the room, for example using a smartphone camera.

This should work to the centimeter – that is, provide much more precise position data than GPS, Galileo and similar satellite systems. The Scape developers want to make this possible worldwide in the long term, but so far they have created the necessary map material for London only.

Facebook bought the virtual reality market in 2014 with the acquisition of Oculus. However, the operators of the social network are also working intensively on augmented reality. By far the most important product is Spark AR Studio,

This is software that users can use to attach beards or funny noses to photos or videos of faces on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. There are always rumors that Facebook, like a number of other companies, are working on AR glasses, but this has not been confirmed. Facebook could merge the hardware with Oculus VR products or at least market them through the well-known manufacturer.
